When the moon rose over the sycamore,
I put on my dress — sky‑blue and embroidery.
When a star sprang over Kerem Teiman,
I donned my cap — gold and purple.
My sisters say to me: What’s with you, girl?
Today isn’t a festival, not a holiday, nor the Sabbath.
But on the roof the cats are praying,
and my heart is like an infant in swaddling.
O mother, O father, what has happened to my heart?
What was, what occurred, what is this trouble?
Why, why does it not slumber nor sleep
when night falls on the Kerem Teiman neighborhood?
What does it want, what does it want, what will it say?
Why does it laugh? Why does it cry? What is it singing?
O mother, O father, what has happened to my heart?
O tell me, mother‑dear,
what is this called by name?
All day I run, clacking in clogs,
but at night — ah! — there is no end to the stars!
And a Yemenite moon wrapped in a tallit,
and the wind sings a song in Yemenite.
And a matchmaker entered my father’s house, in silence.
Father, no! Oh father, no! Not today yet!
Do not give me away yet… Tell him: just a little longer…
Let him go! But… let him come after Shabbat!
O mother, O father, what has happened to my heart?
What was, what occurred, what is this trouble?
Why, why does it not slumber nor sleep
when night falls on the Kerem Teiman neighborhood?
Do not lead me to the sages, O father.
No potions will help me, O father,
for today, between the sycamore and the cypress,
three doves hovered over our house.
And one dove looked into my eyes,
and one dove said: oy‑vey‑vey…
and the third said: fear not, dear,
three doves will lead you to the chuppah.
O mother, O father, what has happened to my heart?
What was? What occurred? What is this trouble?
The doves told me: this is an old thing;
it has happened already not only in Kerem Teiman.
This thing — so the doves say —
has already happened in other neighborhoods as well.
O mother, O father, what has happened to my heart?
O tell me, mother‑dear,
what is this called by name?
