A star winked at the evening’s courtship;
the horizon was flooded with gold.
The Tower of David looks at me differently.
Gloomy is the face of the East before the West.
Yearning in the heart, like the sky’s twilight,
spreads its sorrow so.
Why is it so sad in Jerusalem?
Why does it still throb in me—this is not forgotten.
Softly we watch, we daughters of Bukhara,
daughters from a distant land.
To the walls—from there—exile was decreed,
upon black stones in the Old City.
Did you know, I am Zehra.
I am Zehra from a distant land.
Beyond sea and mountain, I am from the city of Bukhara,
but my home is in the Old City.
Gloomy are the walls there.
Thousands of years have stamped their seal upon stone.
And the daughters of Bukhara coo like doves;
they go out in their yearning—the yearning of a loving woman.
Did you know, I am Zehra.
I am Zehra from a distant land.
Beyond sea and mountain, I am from the city of Bukhara,
but my home is in the Old City.
A cloud of dew descends upon our eyes,
and as night falls in silence,
we will hide our faces beneath our veils,
we will go out and look straight at the walls.
There was one—we met one evening;
my heart was in his arms.
And when day came, he put on a knitted cap;
his neck was wrapped in the sweater I knitted.
And he went to those walls;
while I waited for him, he fell,
as many of them fell,
upon the stones of the Old City.
Did you know, I am Zehra.
I am Zehra from a distant land.
Beyond sea and mountain, I am from the city of Bukhara,
but my home is in the Old City.
