וְשׁוּב נִשְׁאֶרֶת לְבַדָּה הַנַעֲרָה וּמְכַבָּה בַּלָאט אֶת הַמְּנוֹרָה וְהִבְהוּבֵי-פְּנִינִים קְסוּמֵי - אוֹרוֹת כָּבִים אֶחָד אֶחָד עַל צַוָּארָה

And again the girl remains alone and quietly extinguishes the lamp, and pearly, enchanted flickers of light go out one by one upon her neck

וְשַׁלְהֲבוֹת - פְּרָגִים בָּאֲגַרְטֵל עוֹטוֹת צָעִיף שָׁחֹר, הָרְאִי אָפֵל וְהִיא שׁוֹמַעַת: אֶל תּוּגַת חַדְרָהּ עַל בְּהוֹנוֹת-רַגְלָיו נִכְנַס הַלֵּיל

And the flames—poppies in the vase— put on a black veil, the mirror is dim, and she hears: into the sorrow of her room the night enters on tiptoe

וְהִיא יוֹדַעַת: פֹּה הָיָה אֶחָד אֶת צְעָדָיו זוֹכֵר הַמַּרְבָד אֶת שְׁמוֹ לוֹחֵשׁ עוֹד חֶרֶשׁ הַשָׁעוֹן וְהוּא הָלַך וְהוּא רָחוֹק לָעַד

And she knows: there was one here, the carpet remembers his steps, his name the clock still whispers softly, and he has gone, and he is far forever
