I am like the king of a land of rains,
Rich yet powerless, young — but sated with days,
Who scorns the fawning retinue of his tutors,
Even among his lapdogs his soul is already weary.
He has no pastime — neither hawking, nor
the people who perish before his hall;
his best jester soothes him with song,
but in this there is no cure for the dreadful malady.
His canopied bed seems to him a grave,
and the ladies, for whom every magnate is a man,
can find no wanton gown to ignite
the fire of desire in the youthful skeleton.
The sage of the realm, who draws gold from dross,
even he does not grasp the root of the decay;
and in baths of blood, the heritage of the Romans —
the yearning of men of power grown old —
he does not find warmth for the senseless carcass;
green tea-waters course in it instead of blood.
