For the twenty shekels I took
without permission from the wallet,
my mother's warmth, and I went
to buy myself some nail polish.
In the evening they called me to the living room,
and I was ashamed,
and for that I am grateful.
For all the uphills I pedaled
on the way back
from the city home, when I fell,
because I wasn't careful.
They put stitches on my chin,
and I even have a scar,
and for that I am grateful.
To the boy in class who told me
that I'm not pretty;
to the commander who screamed at me
when I was late to the army;
to Dad, who scolded every weekend:
“When will you finally behave like a big girl?”
I am grateful.
For the two friendships I lost
on that same Saturday night,
when the guy I fell in love with
and my friend Liat
passed by me hugging,
their hands intertwined,
and for that I am grateful.
For a competition I lost,
although I was the very best,
broken, very frightened,
and sad,
I grabbed a guitar from the room,
sang to myself alone,
and for that I am grateful.
To the boy in class who told me
that I'm not pretty;
to the commander who screamed at me
when I was late to the army;
to Dad, who scolded every weekend:
“When will you finally behave like a big girl?”
I am grateful.
To the people on the street who
thought I was strange;
to the neighbors who yelled at me
when I didn't pay attention to the time;
to myself, to whom I always said,
“Honey, one day you'll still grow up,”
I am grateful.
For the twenty shekels I took,
for the unnecessary fight,
for an unimportant competition —
for all of them I am grateful.
