On the shore of Eilat or El-Arish a little sardine met a shark. Today they meet a brown shark — so what do you say? You say “shalom”.

A little sardine says “shalom”, and the shark looks at it in silence. “Say shalom,” calls the sardine, and the shark doesn’t understand.

אז הסרדין מרים קולו 'אני מוכן תמורת שלום לתת לך סנפיר שלם" והכריש חרש-אילם...

So the sardine raises its voice: “I am ready, in exchange for peace, to give you a whole fin,” and the shark is deaf and mute...

But that young sardine was also a brilliant diplomat; therefore it did not give in — day by day it gave more.

It gave its tail in exchange for peace, its two eyes in exchange for peace; for a fine, broad peace — its whole belly and back.

Today they meet a brown shark — so what do you say? You say “shalom”. Shalom, shalom — and the shark just smiles and keeps silent.

אז הסרדין במר לבו הריע באזני אויבו "תמורת שלום גדול גדול אני מוכן לתת הכל"!

Then the sardine, in the bitterness of its heart, cried out into its enemy’s ears: “In exchange for a great, great peace I am ready to give everything!”

זאת הכריש סוף-סוף שמע והוא סוף-סוף "שלום" אמר אמר שלום, חשף שיניו והסרדין טרוף טורף

This the shark at last heard, and at last it said “shalom”. It said “shalom”, bared its teeth — and the sardine was savagely devoured.
