A few years ago, on Hayarkon Street in Tel Aviv, I saw an old Jew cleaning the street.
His face was beautiful, but his body was completely broken; the Shekhinah seemed to rest upon his face.
I approached him and said, "Shalom aleichem!" He answered me with a Polish accent: "Aleichem shalom."
I asked him in Yiddish: "My sweet Jew," dear Jew, "would you tell me, where are you from?"
"From Piaseczno," he answered. It was like a bomb in my heart. It was the first time I met a survivor from there.
"Did you ever see Rabbi Kalonymus Kalman?" I asked. He replied: "Of course! I studied with him all my childhood.
At eleven years old I arrived in Auschwitz. They thought I was seventeen. They sent me to a labor camp.
I have no one; I am alone in the world," he continued sweeping the street.
"Children, dear sweet children," from within the fire the voice still speaks.
"The greatest thing in the world is to do good for someone else!"
I said to him: "My friend, I am a Hasid of Rabbi Kalman; perhaps you would be willing to tell me something in his name."
He looked at me and said: "After the camps, do you really think we still remember?
And how can I describe to you the welcoming of Shabbat? We danced around the Rebbe, all the children.
But one thing I remember that he told us again and again, and I will never forget all my life:"
"Children, dear sweet children," from within the fire he whispers to me and says:
"The greatest thing in the world is to do good for someone else!"
"In the camp, when I realized that my whole family was gone, I got up at night and wanted to end my life.
Then I heard the Rebbe’s voice in my ears: ‘Children, remember to do good for someone else.’
Do you know how much good one can do at night in Auschwitz? Around you on the floor are broken people.
All night I sat, listened, encouraged, and comforted — and I stayed alive."
"Children, dear sweet children," from within the fire he whispers to me and says:
"The greatest thing in the world is to do good for someone else!"
"Even today sometimes I cannot find meaning in my life, I go into the sea, but again his voice is in my ears:
‘The greatest thing...’ Do you know how much good one can do on the streets of Tel Aviv?"
"Children, dear sweet children," from within the fire the voice still speaks.
"The greatest thing in the world is to do good for someone else!"
