מִדַּרְכֵי הַתְּשׁוּבָה לִהְיוֹת הַשָּׁב צוֹעֵק תָּמִיד לִפְנֵי ה', בִּבְכִי וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים וְעוֹשֶׂה צְדָקָה כְּפִי כּוֹחוֹ, וּמִתְרַחֵק הַרְבֵּה מִן הַדָּבָר שֶׁחָטָא בּוֹ וּמְשַׁנֶּה שְׁמוֹ, כְּלוֹמַר: אֲנִי אַחֵר וְאֵינִי אוֹתוֹ הָאִישׁ שֶׁעָשָׂה אוֹתָם הַמַּעֲשִׂים

Among the ways of repentance is that the penitent always cries out before the Lord, with weeping and supplication, gives charity according to his ability, greatly distances himself from the thing in which he sinned, and changes his name, saying: “I am another, and I am not the same person who did those deeds.”

מְשַׁנֶּה מַעֲשָׂיו, לְטוֹבָה וּלְדֶרֶךְ יְשָׁרָה, גוֹלֶה מִמְּקוֹמוֹ גָּלוּת מְכַפֶּרֶת עֲווֹנוֹ, שֶׁגּוֹרֶמֶת לוֹ לִהְיוֹת עָנָו וּשְׁפַל רוּחַ וּמְשַׁנֶּה שְׁמוֹ, כְּלוֹמַר: אֲנִי אַחֵר וְאֵינִי אוֹתוֹ הָאִישׁ שֶׁעָשָׂה אוֹתָם הַמַּעֲשִׂים

He changes his deeds, for the good and to a straight path; he goes into exile from his place, exile atones for his iniquity, for it causes him to be humble and lowly in spirit, and he changes his name, saying: “I am another and not the same man who did those deeds.”

צוֹעֵק תָּמִיד בְּכָל כֹּחוֹ בִּבְכִי וּבְתַחֲנוּנִים אֲנִי אַחֵר! וְאֵינִי אוֹתוֹ הָאִישׁ שֶׁעָשָׂה אוֹתָם הַמַּעֲשִׂים! אֶתְמוֹל רָחוֹק הָיִיתִי, הַיּוֹם קָרוֹב

He always cries out with all his strength, with weeping and supplication: “I am another! And I am not the same man who did those deeds! Yesterday I was far; today I am near.”
