Do not put on the festive dress.
Do not ever laugh.
Around you they will flatter and entice and babble,
and I will trace for you a circle of worlds,
and I, upon its line, like a vulture, will wheel,
delivering you from the sons of Ham and keeping you from their throng,
lest you see the sun, lest you know a festival,
lest you ever laugh.
If you flee to the hidden places of the house,
if in the company of friends you wander,
you will not flee from the cry of the bird of prey
that cries to you: 'my wife, my wife'.
To the height of your loins and the preciousness of your foot—
who will hide them from my eyes with dust?
Like a candle I will accompany you, and like an enemy I will stalk you,
for you are mine, all of you, all of you, all of you,
in the lightning of your nails and the spark of your earring;
and those who behold you are my haters, and your debt is from my poverty,
and the earth will split where your foot treads,
and from the dust my eyes will break open.
And when you go to a bed for two,
and in the embrace of strangers you will rush,
you will not escape the man of the eyes
who cries to you: 'my wife, my wife'.
From the finger of strangers, from a glance and a breath,
my jealousy will surround you like a mother,
and I will make you a desolation, and you shall sit desolate;
no grace of yours will he desire, no voice of yours will be heard,
and I will cast upon you an old age born in a day,
and your flutes will be scattered, and we will not gather them back,
and you will remember all this for me until breath is spent,
beloved, beloved and mother.
And when your understanding becomes darkness,
and when with a curse you bite at my poverty,
what is left to the man of darkness
who still cries: 'my wife, my wife'?
