Five double-humped camels
stride in silence, bearing on their backs
ten Turks of grave countenance,
and drawn swords gleam in their hands
A caravan advances—whom does it bring
now to the sultan’s house?
Sands, the moon, a desert stretched out,
and only in the distance the jackal weeps
All the flowers of Shiraz have withered in sorrow,
and even the fair in Isfahan is in mourning,
for no one saw, until evening fell,
the princess, the Rose of Shushan
Cloths wrapped her, Turks abducted her.
Where did she disappear? No one knew.
A caravan proceeds—whom does it bring?
Only the wind alone will know.
Come, O wind, come, O wind, for Shiraz calls you.
To the wind, to the wind, Isfahan sings.
Come, come.
Who can be compared with you?
Please go forth and find
the Rose of Shushan.
Please go forth and hear her weeping, her supplication.
Then from the east I appeared,
and I set out in flight and in dance.
On camels’ humps I tapped,
and I whirled high columns of sand.
A caravan proceeds,
rising and sinking,
rising and sinking up to the neck,
for there is no escape anymore,
for no one escapes anymore
from me—the desert wind.
Here is the wind, here is the wind—all Shiraz is aglow.
To the wind, to the wind, Isfahan sings.
Come, come—here she returns.
On the wind’s wing
the Rose of Shushan shall rest.
On the wind’s wing
the Rose of Shushan shall rest.
