[חלק א] על פי מדעי הטבע האדם כלול בטבע אם כלול האדם בטבע כלולים כל מעשיו

[Part A] According to the natural sciences the human is part of nature if the human is part of nature then all his actions are part of it

יוצא שעל פי המדע טבעי הוא מעשה האדם אף פרי מעשה האדם טבעי הוא לכל פרטיו

It follows that, according to science, human action is natural and even the fruit of human action is natural in all its details

שני התולעת, קור העכביש ליחת השבלול, יערת הדבש כפרחים מפלסטיק, כדשא סינטטי הנמשכים ברצף ממח ברנש

the scarlet of the worm, the spider’s thread, the snail’s mucus, the honeycomb, like plastic flowers, like synthetic grass, all drawn in a continuum from a human brain

קיני נמלים, מאורות שועלים מעונות אריות, שריוני צבים כממגורות חיטה, כמעונות עובדים כתשלובת נסרכת מאנשים

ant nests, fox dens, lions’ lairs, turtles’ shells, like grain silos, like workers’ quarters, as a complex trailing out of people

כקליפת אגוז, כחרצן אפרסק כבית שורשים, כשלכת עלים כן סירה בים, חתיכת אורניום חנות תשמישים, ירחוני נשים

like a walnut shell, like a peach stone, like a root system, like the fall of leaves, so too a boat at sea, a piece of uranium, an accessories shop, women’s magazines

!הכל טבעי! הכל אותו דבר הכל חוקים וחומר, תהליך ומוצר האדם זה רק חי שפולט קו ישר קולט רעיון וכופל מספר

Everything is natural! everything is the same, everything is laws and matter, process and product, the human is just a living being that emits a straight line, receives an idea and multiplies a number

אם כן מה הוא "מלאכותי"? "מלאכותי" להלכה זה כל דבר שנעשתה בו מלאכה אך אינו בניגוד ל"טבעי", כמקובל במילון, בתשבץ, או בדרך כלל

If so, what is “artificial”? “Artificial,” strictly speaking, is anything that has had work done on it, but it is not the opposite of “natural,” as is customary in the dictionary, in the crossword, or generally

אמנם לפעמים שומעים דיבור על חזרה אל הטבע ועל ניכור אך הטבע זה אנחנו, זאת יש לזכור על פי המדע אין לאן לחזור

Indeed, one sometimes hears talk of returning to nature and of alienation, but nature is us, this must be remembered; according to science, there is nowhere to return

[חלק ב] ועוד על פי המדעים נוצרו העולם והחיים בשל נסיבות ותנאים שנתהוו מן הסתם

[Part B] And further, according to the sciences, the world and life arose due to circumstances and conditions that, presumably, came to be

?מן הסתם, מה זאת אומרת שהתרחשו בשרשרת שלא מתחילה או נגמרת אקראית, מאז ומעולם

“Presumably” — what does that mean? That they occurred in a chain that neither begins nor ends, randomly, from time immemorial

סתם שוטטו להם כמה חוקים כמה חוקי טבע חצי זרוקים ?איך הם הגיעו לכאן בכלל סתם שוטטו להם בחלל

A few laws were just wandering around, some laws of nature, half-scattered— how did they even get here? just wandering around in space

והנה עולה ממש לקראתם עוד קבוצת חוקי טבע, גם כן סתם ואם כבר אז כבר התחברו הקבוצות והיו פיצוצים ושלל ניצוצות

And then right toward them comes another set of natural laws, also just because, and while we’re at it, the groups connected, and there were explosions and a host of sparks

כך סתם פגש חלבון את חלבון בחום היפה, באור הנכון ומהם יצא חלבון עם כשרון !והתכשיט כבר יודע לעשות חשבון (סתם)

So, just like that, a protein met a protein in the proper warmth, in the proper light, and from them came a protein with talent, and the gizmo already knows how to do arithmetic. (just because)

ואני מסתובב לי מלא כוונות מלא תכניות, עתיר תרבויות מלא חשיבות, שואף משמעות ואומרים לי שכל זה מן הסתמיות

And I go about full of intentions, full of plans, rich in cultures, full of importance, striving for meaning, and they tell me that all this is from mere randomness

קצת מעליב, מאוד מעציב על סתם אני לא הייתי שם כל כך הרבה תקציב ועוד עם סרח העודף, זוהמת השארית נידופת קרינה עם אימת האחרית

A bit offensive, very saddening; for “just because” I wouldn’t have allocated so much budget, and with the surplus stench, the filth of the residue, radiation wafting with the dread of the end

כן יש בעולם הזה סתם וסתם וסתם וסתם שהראש נסתם ונתקע במרקע של איזה מדען, אפס, ממלמל אם ירצה השם" - ועוד סתם מתנצל"

The human is an arrow sent to the heart of the riddle that yearns to be known. Myriads of openings try and try, but only through one opening does one enter
