גר נגר אחד מוזר
הוא יושב בצריפו
ולא עושה דבר
On our narrow street
lives a strange carpenter
he sits in his shack
and does nothing
איש אינו בא לקנות

כבר אינו מנגר
No one comes to buy
and no one visits
and for two years now
he has not been doing carpentry
והוא חלום אחד נושא עוד בלבבו
לבנות כסא לאליהו שיבוא
על כפיו אותו יביא
לאליהו הנביא
And he still bears one dream in his heart
to build a chair for Elijah who will come
upon his palms he will carry it
to Elijah the Prophet
והוא יושב ומחכה לו
כבר שנים חולם הוא שיזכה לו
על סודו שומר ומחכה לו
מתי כבר יגיע היום
And he sits and waits for him
for years he dreams he will merit him
he keeps his secret and waits for him
when will the day finally arrive?

are covered with dust
for two years the awl has lain
in the sack

בן על הרים ינוו רגלי המבשר
על כפיו אותן יביא
לאליהו הנביא
And he dreams that he will sew shoes
then on the mountains the herald’s feet will be lovely
upon his palms he will bring them
to Elijah the Prophet
והוא יושב ומחכה לו
כבר שנים חולם הוא שיזכה לו
על סודו שומר ומחכה לו
מתי כבר יגיע היום
And he sits and waits for him
for years he dreams he will merit him
he keeps his secret and waits for him
when will the day finally arrive?
בירושלים ישנו
איש לגמרי לא צעיר
שבנה הרבה בתים
בכל פינות העיר
In Jerusalem there is
a man not young at all
who built many houses
in every corner of the city
הוא מכיר כל סמטה
כל רחוב ושכונה
הוא בונה את העיר
כבר שבעים שנה
He knows every alley
every street and neighborhood
he has been building the city
for seventy years
והוא חולם כי, כמו שאת העיר בנה
יניח למקדש את אבן הפינה

And he dreams that, just as he built the city
he will lay the cornerstone for the Temple
upon his palms he will bring it
to Elijah the Prophet
