I am Zechariah ben Ezra,
and my bread is the bread of affliction,
and I live in the transit camp,
by the road to Netanya.
In winter, oh, the cold pierces;
in summer, oh, it stifles me.
But I don’t ask for more —
what there is is enough for me.
Here every rich man and every poor man
finds some flaw or defect in himself;
only the Yemenite fellow
still lacks nothing.
Oh, who would have imagined, who would have said
that the redeemer would remember me?
If what he promised comes to pass
and the King Messiah comes,
everything is worthwhile, for good or for ill —
declares Zechariah ben Ezra.
In politics I’m still naive;
I haven’t a clue, not even an olive’s worth.
Wallah — Herut, wallah — Mapam —
count me outside the house.
For the Creator has decreed upon me:
“Zechariah, deliberate and weigh.
Lead your donkey straight;
do not turn right or left.”
And I, in innocence, ask:
why do your children quarrel?
If only you knew, Israel,
how goodly are your tents.
Oh, who would have said
that the redeemer would remember me?
If what he promised comes to pass
and the King Messiah comes,
everything is worthwhile, for good or for ill —
declares Zechariah ben Ezra.
Yesterday a different heart was born in me,
I carried the banner of Zion,
I went down to Sde Boker,
in Ben-Gurion’s way.
I said to him, “Listen, sir,
let your face not fall.
So long as there is still God Most High,
Zechariah is behind you.”
Then his heart fell silent from joy,
and his tongue was bewildered.
“O Zechariah, happy the people
that has a son like you.”
Happy the people and the state
if this is their strength and might.
If so, I did not descend in vain,
and good was the step I took.
All is worthwhile — by the living Most High God —
declares the man Ben-Gurion.
