מן החוף היה מבחין, בתוך השחור
אור פלאי קורץ לו וצוהל
He knew there was no lighthouse on the shore,
yet always, when he returned with night,
from the shore he would discern, within the black,
a wondrous light winking to him, exultant.
הוא ידע שאין בחוף שום מגדלור
אך תמיד האיר לו אור מתוך השחור
He knew there was no lighthouse on the shore,
yet always a light shone for him from the dark.
היא חיכתה לו בשפתיים מלוחות
הוא חבק אותה אליו דומם
"הוא הבטיח: "אשאר עימך, אחות
אך עם שחר שוב חמק לים
She waited for him with salty lips,
he held her to him in silence.
He promised: “I will stay with you, sister,”
but at dawn he slipped back to the sea.
הוא ידע שאין בחוף שום מגדלור
אך תמיד האיר לו אור מתוך השחור
He knew there was no lighthouse on the shore,
yet always a light shone for him from the dark.
:פעם היא לפתה אותו חזק חזק
"השאר, כי לא אוכל יותר!"
הוא נשק לשתי עיניה, ושתק
אך עם שחר שוב נראה חותר
Once she gripped him very, very tight:
“Stay, for I cannot anymore!”
He kissed her two eyes, and was silent,
but at dawn he was seen rowing again.
אך עם לילה, בשובו מים ושחור
לא האיר לו עוד האור כמגדלור
But come night, returning from sea and black,
the light no longer shone for him like a lighthouse.
הם מצאו אותה בחוף, בין הצדפים
וליבה כגוש פחם שחור
ורק אז בלאט גילו לו השחפים
כי ליבה היה לו מגדלור
They found her on the shore, among the shells,
and her heart like a lump of black coal,
and only then, softly, the gulls revealed to him
that her heart had been his lighthouse.

He knew there was no lighthouse on the shore,
yet always a light shone for him from the dark.
הוא חפן אז את הלב אשר אוכל
פתע שוב זרח הלב וחם
וכיום במרום הצוק, בראש מגדל
הוא מאיר לכל מלח בים
He then cupped the heart that was being consumed;
suddenly the heart shone again and grew warm.
And now, high on the cliff, atop a tower,
he shines for every sailor at sea.
כי למרות שאין בחוף שום מגדלור
לב אחד תמיד מאיר לו מן השחור
For though there is no lighthouse on the shore,
one heart always shines for him from the dark.
