My grandfather planted in secret
a modest carob
that with the wind
bowed its head humbly.
In some years, perhaps more,
it will bear fruit,
if it is kept,
if it is bedded in love.
Let man love man,
and they shall beat their swords.
They will not learn war,
they will learn war no more.
Another day will come,
and his son, of its fruit,
will taste.
Years passed, that same carob
sent forth its crown—
all splendor—
and none equals it for pride.
And its fruits grew sweeter than nectar,
and with the summer
the heavens kissed
its branches with love.
Let man love man,
and they shall beat their swords.
They will not learn war,
they will learn war no more.
Another day will come,
and his son, of its fruit,
will taste.
The land knew tears as well,
it knew the sword;
it became a prey.
Within it was heard a still small voice.
Lonely stood the tree upon the hills;
only a goat groaned,
butting it,
and the winter wind wept.
Let man love man,
and they shall beat their swords.
They will not learn war,
they will learn war no more.
Another day will come,
and his son, of its fruit,
will taste.
I will plant trees of lofty stature,
with upright crowns,
of great splendor,
unmatched for pride.
Then children’s laughter will be heard,
as though today were spring.
The hills will drip
fruits and the sweetness of love.
Let man love man,
and they shall beat their swords.
They will not learn war,
they will learn war no more.
Another day will come,
and his son, of its fruit,
will taste.
