מותני שדות בשיר ובורדים שינס;
מוחות וכוורות גודש דבש תועפות;
Along the tottering suburb, ruins
fasten their shutters, a shelter for desires,
and a cruel sun beats a violent light
on the city as on fields, roofs like ears of grain.
I, whose weapon is a fickle sword,
will tile rhymes in every corner of the city,
will stumble on the words as on paving stones,
more than once to find my songs are forgotten dreams.
The foe of the Yarkon, the providing father,
it girds the loins of the fields with song and with roses;
like vapor the heart’s worries dissipate in it,
minds and hives brim with prodigious honey;
upon the maimed, youthful flesh grows,—
their riches like maidens—rejoicing, in the bloom of days,
and to the harvest it bids to gather, to thrive
in this immortal heart that longs to bloom!
When it, like a poet, descends to the cities,
the lowliest of things are ennobled in it;
like a king it calls, without noise or servants,
on palatial castles as well as simple hospitals.
