Behold, evening comes, the friend of the city’s sinners,
an accomplice to their crime, treading wary, wary.
The firmament is sealed like a coffer, and man
turns, never sated, into a bloodthirsty predator.
O evening, beloved of him whose arms
could testify to our weariness—and better
to rest from toil; evening consoles
creatures whom pain rends without mercy.
It tempers the fervor of a stubborn man of science,
grants the laborer leave, urges him to sleep;
conversely, demonic, cruel youths
crowd the expanse, lumbering like puppies.
They beat their wings on shutter and on cornice,
and before the wind-tossed light of a streetlamp
Prostitution ignites, burning to disgrace,
gaping her shame like an anthill.
Tiptoeing, secret, by a circuitous path,
like an enemy host before it sallies to attack,
it swarms in the bowels of a mud-famed city,
as in the entrails the worm lies crouched.
And from the kitchens a whistle already bursts forth,
on theater stages a groan breaks out;
the houses of pleasure gather their crowd:
whores and pimps, a perfect monstrous pairing.
And the thieves’ hour descends upon the city;
they multiply in the young night;
with gentle coaxing they entice doors to yawn open,
and their concubine dons sumptuous finery.
At this hour, my soul, better that you withdraw,
and do not bend your ear to the seducing rustle.
At such an hour the sick cannot bear the torment:
around their heads the night coils like a rope.
It seals their fate forever—to the abyss—
and the sound of their death-rattles fills the hall;
they will never again be sated by the goodness
of a warm evening crust, before a beloved soul.
Many among them have never known the taste
of the sweetness of a warm home; they have never lived in one.
