My soul yearned for Bethel, even languished;
even in dreams it ascended to behold it.
It ascended—and found no healing, for a dream
does not heal a soul that, awake, is sick.
It fell ill on a day it did not entreat any face; were it not for their preciousness and splendor, it would have perished.
It wore away—to be renewed—and labored to ascend,
for not for naught was it exiled the day it was exiled.
It was exiled—and the doors of a spring it opened, and still
its gaze was set toward deep waters.
It hung upon a peg and bound a binding:
not to forsake wisdom; and it uttered an oath.
