Fatma rises in the morning as the sun comes up
and slips out of the tent on tiptoe.
She travels to the neighboring, big city,
she will never again bring the herd out to graze.
There in the city no woman is oppressed and beaten.
She will comb her hair; at night she will dance.
She will buy a shiny red pantsuit,
she sold a she-camel; she will never roam again.
Return to the tent, O Fatma,
a lightning struck you, a crazy lightning.
Return to the flock, O Fatma,
God touched you or a devil erred — return.
And the shopkeeper looks and laughs: you're a clown.
If you want, then buy suits for the flock as well.
And Fatma fixed her gaze on him, like an arrow she pierced him,
and the shopkeeper whispered: I only meant to jest.
They laugh there in the city: a shepherdess in red,
she's lost her mind, a confused daughter of the desert.
Children hurl stones with malice,
she's a whore or perhaps a spy.
Return to the tent, O Fatma,
a lightning struck you, a crazy lightning.
Return to the flock, O Fatma,
God touched you or a devil erred — return.
And when Fatma returned to graze the flock,
they remembered there in the city the shepherdess in red.
The men there lusted; they lusted to make sport of her,
and silence then reigned in the city like in Sodom.
And when Fatma returned to graze the flock,
with a knife she slashed a red suit,
and with that same knife, as if to make sport of her,
they stabbed the whore who had returned from Sodom.
Return to the tent, O Fatma,
a lightning struck you, a crazy lightning.
Return to the flock, O Fatma,
God touched you or a devil erred — return.
