I only remember finding myself going down the steps of an alley in Safed.
A man invited me to stay at his place, and I didn’t imagine that already the next day
I would be bent over a shtender, learning Gemara with Yehoshua, trying to understand the pshat.
I rented a room for two months—everything happened all at once!
I open the door—the rosh yeshiva stands before me; what charm he has, what a look.
“There has always been love in me,” I told him.
“Awe—that’s what our generation is a bit lacking.”
Instead of traveling to India I came here; I’m looking for a refuge from my ego.
Even here you can walk around in shalwar pants and watch time pass slowly.
I didn’t know what was pulling me or where it was all leading.
I felt a light, that something good was beginning, different from the usual.
Like a caterpillar receiving wings—how can one explain the feeling?
Maybe this is what our Rebbe Nachman meant when he said—he said:
“That I am going on a new path that no person has ever walked,
and although it is a very old path, nevertheless it is completely new.”
Chavrusa before netz; after the coffee we immerse in Sanz.
Netz at Abuhav; a guy in a galabiya hands you biscuits and a cup of tea.
And from there, through the alleys and the fog, to the yeshiva; these are the paths of Nehardea.
And how we sang forty times: “Learning Torah is better than the World to Come.
The World to Come is a good thing, but learning Torah is the best thing...”
Studying Torah is self-sacrifice; you have to instill it into the heart.
“She is like a woman,” the rabbi said, “leave her for a day or two and she will take offense.”
It’s the gym for the Jewish mind; you shout it at the top of your lungs.
I remember the academy—once I forgot to whisper; what faces the librarians made at me.
I didn’t know, etc.
That I am going, etc.
At dusk they take me—an old house, Eliyahu on the couch,
holding a flute in his hand; he isn’t playing—melody, for him, is like prophecy.
No coercion, no decision; the keyword here in Safed—get to know it—is “flow.”
But when it comes, it throws you straight into the sanctuary of music.
I’m utterly enchanted after years of courses and a lot of cafeteria time.
A culture of yet another degree and yet another achievement—it reached, for me, the level of hysteria.
Eliyahu caught me in the yard; he was just tying his donkey by the entrance.
“Put aside what you learned there,” he said. “Discover the spring within you”...
And what did I learn there? Try to always be in joy.
“Me’ayin yavo ezri”—that’s not a question; to be “ayin” (“nothingness”) is no simple matter.
“There is no despair,” cried our Rebbe; I too, into the wadi,
which answered me in my own voice, and then I understood how much I am not alone...
“That I am going on a new path that no person has ever walked,
and although it is a very old path, nevertheless it is completely new.”
