והנה ידעתי כי יתלחשו עלי: "הלא זה האיש אשר ידענו בו שהיה מסוחרי ארץ, ותורתו אימתי נעשית? והתורה העידה, לא מעבר לים היא, שאינה מצויה לא בתגרנים ולא בסחרנים!" דע לך אחי, כי נסיעתי למרחקים לא היה לקבץ עושר, כי אם לפרנס בני ביתי וברוך אשר עשה לי הנפש הזה שלא לאהוב ממון מעודי

And behold, I knew that they would whisper about me: “Is this not the man whom we knew to be among the merchants of the land? And when does he engage in his Torah? And the Torah has testified: ‘It is not across the sea,’ that it is not found among peddlers nor among merchants!” Know, my brother, that my journeys to distant places were not to amass wealth, but only to provide for my household. And blessed is He who has given me this nature—not to love money since my youth.

כי בנסיעתי לדרך – דעתי עליה ובישיבתי בחנות – דעתי עליה אפלו בשעת משא ומתן – דעתי עליה על התורה הקדושה – דעתי עליה

For when I travel on the road—my mind is on it, and when I sit in the shop—my mind is on it, even during business dealings—my mind is on it, upon the holy Torah—my mind is on it.

ודע לך אחי כי האיש היהודי, אם יעזוב את התורה ומתרחק ממנה אז גם היא מתרחקת ממנו אבל אם אין דעתו לעוזבה, רק מחמת אונס אי אפשר לו ללמוד ולדבוק בה חס וחלילה שתרחק ממנו, רק שתשב ותצפה עוד אליו

And know, my brother, that if the Jewish man leaves the Torah and distances himself from it, then it too distances itself from him. But if it is not his intention to abandon her, and only due to compulsion he cannot study and cleave to her, Heaven forbid that she should distance herself from him; rather, she sits and still waits for him.

ועלי יעידו שאף בנסיעתי לא מנעתי לקחת עמי גמרא ומשנה ומקרא וקיימתי בעצמי "אל תעזבה ותצרךָּ" ו"אף חוכמתי עמדה לי"

And they will testify about me that even in my travels I did not refrain from taking with me Gemara, Mishnah, and Scripture, and I fulfilled in myself: “Do not forsake her and she will guard you,” and: “Also my wisdom has stood by me.”
