I have a reservist friend in Gaza.
He told me they were on lookout, amid all the destruction and death and ruin.
In the ash and black smoke he suddenly saw a flower, a bougainvillea,
pink and blooming.
He thought to himself, how life bursts through death,
growing out of it,
opening and rising with such simplicity and quiet.
How immense and delicate is the movement that grows out of the terror.
It's easy to forget, to think it's the other way around,
but the truth is that life fills everything.
Maybe, to remember in the meantime, we should put on a good song
and cast an anchor into the water.
