[First verse]
They asked about the heart of Jerusalem, asked after her peace.
Stones in the heart of Jerusalem, the market square is bustling.
She wraps herself in lies and injustice for the sake of the wall’s work.
But through the veil, our city appears naked.
She who does not pursue justice, justice, does not want peace.
For there is no peace without justice; so why have we come here?
What, did we dream a dream that awoke today?
[Second verse]
My dove again in the clefts of the rock, the hawk’s tremor above.
And in the hidden of the stair to devour, the mouth of the wily gapes.
These are the lands beyond the sea behind us—we are their desire.
These are the lands around us—we are their song.
It is the same caravan on the road turning to the sea.
A king, smeared with blood, pursues it.
From the desert—his beast too—they are all upon us.
[Third verse]
How Jerusalem primps and dances in the crowds.
Participating, surely rubbing shoulders, casting her mantles over the flocks.
They asked amid the hair-splitting of her ministers—no measure and no stature.
Only a match is missing among her courtyards, and every courtyard is abuzz.
And we were already in the oven; now we’re on the skillet.
We puff up drunken honor, crackle a little,
almost burn, are refined slowly.
[Interlude]
Why are you so fiercely rushing to scratch yourself on the knife?
Enough already—let the knife rest too; yes, get off the knife.
And do you already know how to observe shmita properly,
that you run to take more and more lands,
with a whiff of fraud, a suspicion of robbery, under cover of darkness, with a ruler’s immunity?
Is this redemption? Is this her honor? Like a thief breaking in, Judah.
And to whom will you sell your “field” in the sabbatical year?
Or perhaps you’ll Islamize or Christianize yourself for a year?
And before whom will you play the innocent, sabbatical after sabbatical,
while the land beneath you is taken captive like a handmaid?
In whose eyes does this please? You take land—you give no redemption.
Or perhaps your fingers are clenched very, very, very, very, very—
trained to relax? Skilled to release? Practiced in letting go?
[Bridge]
Oh mama, mama Earth,
oh mama Earth,
oh mama, mama Earth,
earth, my earth,
until my death,
till my ear—th.
[Fourth verse]
Do not stir and do not awaken a hatred that will not consent.
Once it comes out, none will bring it back—not rabbi, not minister, not cantor.
Someone will yet rouse against us, like one waking from his dream—
we shall be effaced, and our spoils, we shall sink into his abyss.
If only you would show me your appearance, let me hear your voice.
Truth and justice in your gates—that is what makes your appearance lovely.
That is the sweetness of your voice, favor in the eyes of your beloved.
