We will sing you an old tune,
an old tune about a spring,
about a mischievous spring.
Its waters were crystal clear,
its waves were deep blue,
above golden sand.
It sparkled in the springtimes,
it kissed the springtimes,
crossing fields of grain,
it refreshed a weary wanderer,
and to the bending tree
it gave its vitality.
But in the depth of his soul it murmured and surged,
and he poured his longing out to the moon and the sun —
he yearned for the unknown and longed for a dream,
and did not know for what (for what).
But one day, quivering greatly,
he asked the god of the rivers:
make me great, please,
I want to be a rapid,
I want to flow, to swell,
in the wild dance.
I yearn to wander far,
to set mills in motion with might,
to bear bridges of gold,
I long to be deep —
to unfathomable depths and without bounds,
with ships upon my back.
And so, in the depth of his soul it murmured and surged,
and he poured his yearning out to the moon and the sun —
he aspired to the unknown and longed for a dream,
and did not know for what (for what).
The god heard the spring
and granted all his desire,
and led it to the sea;
the sea, in white foam,
swallowed the song of the spring,
and its fate was sealed.
The sea is great. The spring is small.
Its sweetness turned salty, its song was lost.
No longer will it refresh the wanderer,
and only one small fisherman
heard the weeping of the spring,
which begged to get out.
And again, in the depth of his soul it murmured and surged,
and he poured his longing out to the moon and the sun —
he yearned for the hidden and longed for a dream,
and did not know for what (for what).
