My blood flows, so it sometimes seems to me,
like the measured sighs of a spring of blood.
I clearly hear the whisper of its flow,
and in vain I grope for the place of the wound.
Like from a dueling field it drips toward the city,
it runs, turning every paving-stone into a tiny island,
slaking the thirst of all creatures,
painting the nature of the world red.
I sought the wine’s intoxication, to bring
the comfort of sleep upon the soul’s terrors,
but it only deepened attentiveness and wisdom within me.
In love I sought oblivion — and it
spread upon my bed a mat of needles,
and only drenched the daughters of nightmares in blood.
