The years of my youth were a dusky storm to me,
through which at times a flash of the sun’s rays broke;
the thunder and the mighty rains opposed me,
leaving in my garden but a few blushing fruits.
But the autumn of thoughts has visited me now.
Now the ground’s surface must be leveled,
work it well, with hoe and spade,
for waters have carved in it pits all alike.
And who knows whether my buds, vision-flowers,
in the sodden sand will manage to find nourishment—
the wondrous sap by which they will bloom again.
Pain, terrible pain—the time devours life,
our dark enemy, gnawing at the heart;
from blood that is lost it blossoms, grows.
