You sing about a bird
that fled from the neighbor.
I don’t understand all the words,
but your voice rings in my ears.
And this bird tears
the hearts of the listeners.
With her voice she paints
the suffering of the meek.
And my place in the hall
is ever more ensnared
by the enchanting waves.
The sounds are so thin, so thin,
they prick like knives.
And my place in the world keeps narrowing,
in the swelling waters;
waves upon waves run wild,
as only the wretched can.
You sing about a bird,
with blood in her beak,
all the way to you,
with a broken wing.
The world weeps with her,
with her lost soul,
and salts with her tears
the venerable land.
And only you, who cleaned her wounds,
knew the bitter truth,
that the blood mingled with her blood
is the neighbor’s blood whom she stabbed.
And all this time,
while you sing,
my heart beats,
and in the hall I silence
the neighbor’s voice.
Enchanted by your face,
how can I defend myself,
when you come with your songs
to my bosom for comfort.
And all this time,
as you sing,
in my very fibers
I know
that this bird
is singing about me.
