Anyone who was combat in the nineties can easily tell how much crap he ate in Gaza. I’ve got another story too— a story I haven’t told yet, that’s been with me for years, choking inside me among a thousand memories and nightmares. About stones, bottles, planks—and I also remember how once they dropped a refrigerator on us from a rooftop. It crashed down with a thud less than a meter behind me. I swallowed hard and carried on with a mission I can’t recall. Maybe we pulled a suspect out of a house in the dead of night, zip-tie on the hands, flannel over the eyes, rightfully or by mistake—because there, there was a bit of everything: successes and disasters—one big salad. Maybe we were on our way to set an ambush by the mosque, lying by the entrance, trying to pinch our noses, to breathe without smelling, not to let the stench in, not to see rats sixty centimeters long coming at you. And you’re not allowed to move, not allowed to blink, the uniform sticks to you, you’re not allowed to scratch, just hope the dawn will already break up above and you can slip away under its cover straight back to the camp. Fear and loathing in every alley, schooled in violence, eaten up by hate. How much shit we ate by the spoon, drank through a straw, from a can on the bottom of the bottom. An inner hatch opens and memory starts to flow— it was so long ago and it’s going nowhere, buried in the soul until it suddenly bursts out, from pain to a sigh to a text and then to a microphone. A five-year-old was killed by a bullet that was meant for the legs, the battalion commander takes a stone in the mouth and seven teeth fly, a soldier lost it and brought someone a helmet down on the crown, a platoon commander was dismissed for forgetting a radio in a Peugeot’s trunk. From Shati to Sheikh Radwan and on to the Rimal neighborhood, muezzins I could identify by pitch and by style, afraid nonstop while acting like I’m unfazed, from pursuer to pursued, chasing in a circle. And so day after day, hour by hour, minute by minute, a routine of violence that never stops. But you saw movies about it and read books about it, and I promised you a story you don’t know.
November first, ’91, Madrid, Spain’s capital— Arab and Jewish leaders for the first time around one table, unbelievable optimism, people begin to imagine a different horizon for this region, a horizon that doesn’t bleed. And we’re stuck in Gaza, staring at the television that was black and white—at least in my memory, until the hour came when we went out on patrol: mag in, vest on—and then one big shock, because those same streets of protests and arrests suddenly filled with shouts of joy and a sea of revelers, the same hands that pelted us with stones this time threw rice, candies, and olive branches.
Nahal soldiers in uniform on the main street, inside a cheering crowd, we didn’t know what to think, didn’t want to interfere, but it happened, and I was there—the moment a sharp, clear message was sent that never arrived. After years of weed and alcohol, and given my age, I was no longer sure this story was for real, couldn’t even say whether it happened at all, until I was invited to perform before a General Staff officers’ forum. I told what I remembered and asked to understand whether any of the top brass before me had been through similar things. Turned out that not only in Gaza but across all the territories, Palestinians on that day beat the sword into plowshares. The yearning for peace that was here wasn’t recorded under our name alone in the land registry, like a bucket where hope had steeped until a heavy foot kicked it. It happened only once, and since then it doesn’t happen, and there’s a lot to learn here, but no one wants to. At the end of the meeting I finished my beer in the green room, stepped out and suddenly the Chief of Staff is standing in front of me. ‘Maybe write a song about it,’ he said—‘it’s a waltz with Shaanan.’ So here it is, the song is here.
