O my land, my mother, why
are luster and sorrow so withered?
The memory of a foreign land
unawares rises upon the heart.
On the hill — fir blossoms;
on the plain — ancient oaks;
down the slope, along the stream’s banks —
birch maidens in Sabbath dress.
The hand of the sun is too short to pierce;
in the heart of the forest, a crimson spear;
an innocent day in the dwelling of the sons of the pine —
fragrant darkness and a dream.
Oh, my mother! Yes, sickness has fallen upon you;
yes, your affront shall be exacted by God —
over those smitten by your noonday, as of old,
you will yet pour out fragrance and shade.
