From the east and the sea and from all the ends,
from the edge of the wilderness and the heart of the waters,
hearts ablaze, hands outstretched —
homeward
And what are rifle fire and the dread of the prison pit,
the darkness of the deep and the flint-teeth of the rock,
to the soul of a Jew, captive to the wondrous light —
homeward
If I die on a ship,
wandering, drifting,
my body was cast into the shuddering abyss —
still I shall return by my one, unique road —
homeward
And wreathed with sea-grass upon my head like a garland,
with quenched eyes that modestly veil the blaze,
I will cling to the shore in a silence that cries out —
homeward
And you will see my image in the traveling cloud,
and you will see my image in the dying light of day,
and my voice will pursue you, uncomforted, unquiet —
homeward.
