We will sing you an old tune,
an old tune about a spring,
about a playful spring.
Its waters were crystal clear,
its ripples were blue, so blue,
above the golden sand.
It sparkled in the springtimes,
it kissed the tender ears of grain,
crossing the fields of grain.
It refreshed a weary wanderer,
and to the bending tree
it gave its life.
But in the depths of its soul it murmured and hummed,
and poured its longing to the moon and the sun —
it yearned for the hidden and pined for a dream,
and did not know for what (for what).
But one day, trembling greatly,
it asked the god of the rivers:
Make me great, I pray.
I want to be a cascade,
I want to flow and swell,
in a wild dance.
I yearn to wander far,
to mightily set mills in motion,
to carry bridges of gold.
I long to be deep,
to unfathomed depths and beyond all bounds,
with ships upon my back.
And so, in the depths of its soul it murmured and hummed,
and poured its longing to the moon and the sun —
it yearned for the hidden and pined for a dream,
and did not know for what (for what).
The god listened to the spring
and granted all it wished,
and led it to the sea.
The sea, in white foam,
swallowed the spring’s song,
and its fate was sealed.
The sea is great; the spring is small.
Its sweetness turned salty, its song was lost.
No longer will it slake a wanderer,
and only one little fisherman
heard the spring’s weeping,
which longed to break free.
And again, from the depths of its soul it murmured and hummed,
and poured its longing to the moon and the sun —
it longed for the hidden and yearned for a dream,
and did not know for what (for what).
