אמרתי לאליהו הנביא
מתי יבוא משיח שאת הגאולה יביא
מתי יבוא, מתי יביא
אתה הרי יודע, אליהו הנביא
I said to Elijah the Prophet:
When will the Messiah come, who will bring the redemption?
When will he come, when will he bring it?
You surely know, Elijah the Prophet.
אמר לי אליהו הנביא
מה זאת תשאל אותי, הלוך תלך ושאל אותו
ינון שמו, חפש אותו, תיגש אליו
יאמר לך מתי אכן יבוא
Elijah the Prophet said to me:
Why do you ask me this? Go and ask him.
His name is Yinon; search for him, go up to him;
He will tell you when he will indeed come.
שאלתי לתשבי הגלעדי
היכן נמצא ארמונו וכן האם
יניחו לי שם השומרים לראותו
ואני שאלה לי עמו:
מתי יביא גאולה לעמו?!
I asked the Tishbite, the Gileadite:
Where is his palace, and will
the guards there let me see him?
And I have a question for him:
When will he bring redemption to his people?!
אמר לי אליהו בפתחה של העיר יושב הוא
לא ארמון לא שרביט
משחרית ועד ערבית על עמנו הוא מביט
הוא מחכה רק לך
Elijah said to me: At the entrance of the city he sits—
no palace, no scepter.
From morning to evening he looks upon our people;
he is waiting only for you.
אגש אליו מיד אמרתי לו
אך איך אוכל להכירו מבין המון
האנשים הנכנסים והיוצאים
מהם פשוטים מהם שרים ונכבדים
I will go to him at once, I told him,
but how can I recognize him among the crowd
of people coming and going,
some common, some ministers and dignitaries?
אמר לי בלחישה, קבוצה קטנה
של עניים מסכנים והם יושבים
וחובשים פצעיהם
הוא יושב ביניהם מחכה לסימן מה':
He whispered to me: a small group
of poor, destitute people; they sit
and dress their wounds.
He sits among them, waiting for a sign from the Lord.
מתי יביא גאולה לעמו?!
היום אם בקולו תשמעו
היום הוא יבוא
When will he bring redemption to his people?!
Today, if you heed His voice;
today he will come.
שלום עליך רבי! השלום לך בן לוי?
שלח אותי אליך אליהו הנביא
לשאול מתי יבוא אלינו מר
שמעתי, הוא אמר "היום"
Peace be upon you, my teacher! Is it well with you, son of Levi?
Elijah the Prophet sent me to you
to ask when the Master will come to us.
I heard—he said, “Today.”
חזרתי לנביא וַאני לא הבנתי
כיצד זה אפשר והיום כבר נגמר
והלא הוא אמר
אז הסביר לי הנביא את שאמר:
I returned to the Prophet and did not understand:
How could this be, for the day had already ended?
And yet he said...
Then the Prophet explained to me what he had said:
היום גאולה הוא יביא לעמו!
היום אם בקולו תשמעו
היום הוא יבוא
Today he will bring redemption to his people!
Today, if you heed His voice;
today he will come.
