A wondrous tale about a pious man who would seclude himself in one place and study there the tractate Chagigah. He would turn it over and review it many times, until he learned it well, and he knew no other tractate—he kept turning it over and reviewing it. When he departed this world, he was alone in his house and no one knew of his passing. The figure of a woman came and stood before him and raised her voice in weeping and lamentation, and she greatly increased her cries, until the crowd gathered; and she said to them: “Eulogize this pious man, bury him, and honor his bier, and you will merit the life of the World to Come, for he honored me all his days, and I was neither abandoned nor forgotten.” Immediately all the women gathered and sat with her, and they made a great and solemn lament for him, and that woman wept and cried out. They said to her: “What is your name?” She said to them: “Chagigah is my name.” Once that pious man was buried, that woman vanished from sight. At once they knew that it was the tractate Chagigah that had appeared to them in the form of a woman.
