On a damp morning, in the year תרל"ח, at the time of the grape harvest, they set out from Jaffa on horses, the five riders

Near Umm Labes they made camp, in the heart of swamps and thicket, and climbed a little hill to see the surroundings

Mizraki said to them, after a short hour: “I do not hear birds” — and that is a dreadful sign

“If birds are not to be seen, death stands here before you. Best to leave this place quickly — here I go.”

The doctor leapt onto his horse, for he cared for his health, and his three companions set out to return to the city with him

Then Yoel Salomon said, his two eyes dreamy: “I’m staying here tonight, upon this very hill.”
