יום אחד בחור זריז כשד משחת
עלם חמודות בגיל עשרים
מביתו יצא השכם השכם עם שחר
והלך לצוד לו פרפרים
One day, a nimble lad, quick as greased lightning,
a handsome youth of twenty,
left his home bright and early at dawn,
and went to catch himself some butterflies.
רק עזב ת'כפר ושם ליד היער
נערה פגש בין העצים
"בוקר טוב ילדה יפה", אמר הנער
"בואי נלך לצוד קצת פרפרים"
He had just left the village, and there by the forest
he met a girl among the trees.
"Good morning, pretty girl," said the lad.
"Come, let's go catch some butterflies."
הילדה שמחה שפגשה בנער
לכבודו לבשה בגדים יפים
ושלובי זרועות הם הלכו ליער
הם הלכו לצוד שם פרפרים
The girl was glad she had met the lad,
in his honor she wore pretty clothes,
and arm in arm they went to the forest;
they went there to catch butterflies.
אך הם לא ידעו כי שם בלב היער
אל האהבה שולח חצים
ושהוא שובה לב נערה ונער
שיוצאים לצוד שם פרפרים
But they did not know that there, in the heart of the forest,
the god of love sends his arrows,
and that he captivates the hearts of a girl and a boy
who go out there to catch butterflies.
כשהעלם רק שלח ידו אליה
היא אמרה "אל תתאמץ זה חבל
שמע עזוב את שמלתי כי בין כפליה
פרפרים שם לא תמצא בכלל"
As soon as the youth reached his hand toward her,
she said, "Don't bother—it's no use.
Listen, leave my dress, for between its folds
you won't find any butterflies at all."
על שפתיה הבחור מיד נשק לה
נשיקה כזאת שהיער שר
ולכל מה שקרא אתם ביער
לא היה שום קשר עם פרפר
On her lips, the boy kissed her at once—
a kiss such that the forest sang,
and everything that happened with them in the forest
had nothing to do with butterflies.
בשובם לכפר הם זה לזו הבטיחו
לחזור כל עוד שניהם צעירים
אל אותו היער אשר בו הצליחו
לגלות ביחד פרפרים
On their return to the village they promised each other
to come back as long as they are both young,
to that very forest where they managed
to discover butterflies together.
כי כל עוד הנערה תאהב ת'נער
והשמש שוב תזרח בהרים
אין ספק שהם עוד יחזרו ליער
לא כדי לצוד שם פרפרים
For as long as the girl loves the boy,
and the sun again rises over the mountains,
there is no doubt they will return to the forest—
not to hunt butterflies there.
