When the bonfires of our red life sink,
we will remove from our brow the wreath of festivities,
its leaves tousled and its roses shedding,
and then, in silence, we shall descend to the rivers.
And as the day wanes we will stand upon their shores,
our eyes tracking their course—
abandoned and proud, endless in solitude.
And in the rush of evening crimson
astonished we will see: lo, flowers are coming—
white flowers,
borne in preciousness upon the face of the water,
swept from the margins of a happy garden,
with laughter at noon.
And we knew: before our eyes our youth had passed,
and by evening its memory within our souls;
and then the shadow of the sorrow of the steppes will darken upon our heads,
yet above, star after star will tread over the faces of the mountains,
and a great and strange night will be hallowed over us,
and the evening wind will touch us and hum as upon black violins.
And in the rush of evening crimson
astonished we will see: lo, flowers are coming—
white flowers,
borne in preciousness upon the face of the water,
swept from the margins of a happy garden,
with laughter at noon.
