עת שערי רצון להפתח
יום אהיה כפי לאל שוטח
אנא זכר נא לי ביום הוכח
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
It is the time for the gates of favor to open.
On this day I spread my palms to God.
Please remember me on the day of reproof.
The binder, the bound, and the altar!
באחרית נסה בסוף העשרה:
'הבן אשר נולד לך משרה
אם נפשך בו עד מאד נקשרה
קום, העלהו לי לעולה ברה
אל הר אשר כבוד לך זורח'
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
At the last He tested him, completing the ten trials:
'The son who was born to you from Sarah,
if your soul is bound up with him exceedingly,
arise, bring him up to Me as a pure burnt offering,
to the mountain where My glory shines for you.'
The binder, the bound, and the altar!
אמר לשרה: 'כי חמודך יצחק
גדל ולא למד עבודת שחק
אלך ואורהו אשר לו אל חק'
אמרה: 'לכה אדון, אבל אל תרחק'
ענה: 'יהי לבך באל בוטח'
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
He said to Sarah: 'Your beloved Isaac
has grown, yet has not learned the service of Heaven;
I will go and teach him the statute of God.'
She said: 'Go, my lord, but do not go far.'
He answered: 'Let your heart trust in God.'
The binder, the bound, and the altar!
הלכו שניהם לעסק במלאכה
ויענה יצחק לאביו ככה:
'אבי, ראה אש ועצי מערכה
איה, אדוני, שה אשר כהלכה?
האת ביום זה דתך שוכח?'
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
Both of them went to engage in the task,
and Isaac spoke to his father thus:
'Father, see the fire and the wood for the arrangement;
where, my lord, is the lamb as required by the law?
Are you, on this day, forgetting your faith?'

הכין עצי עולה באון וחיל
ויעקד יצחק כעקדו איל
ויהי מאור יומם בעינם ליל
והמון דמעיו נוזלים בחיל
עין במר בוכה ולב שמח
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
He prepared the wood of the burnt offering with might and vigor,
and he bound Isaac as one binds a ram;
and the light of their day became in their eyes as night,
and torrents of his tears flowed in strength—
an eye weeps bitterly and a heart rejoices.

שיחו לאמי כי ששונה פנה
הבן אשר ילדה לתשעים שנה
היה לאש ולמאכלת מנה
אנה אבקש לה מנחם, אנה?
צר לי לאם תבכה ותתיפח!
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
Tell my mother that her joy has turned away:
The son whom she bore at ninety years
has become a portion for fire and for the knife.
Where shall I seek a comforter for her—where?
I grieve for mother, who will weep and lament!
The binder, the bound, and the altar!
ויהמו כל מלאכי מרכבה
אופן ושרף שואלים בנדבה
מתחננים לאל בעד שר צבא:
'אנא, תנה פדיום וכפר הבה
אל נא יהי עולם בלא ירח'
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
Then all the chariot-angels roared,
Ofanim and Seraphim beseeched earnestly,
pleading with God for the Prince of the Host:
'Please, grant a ransom and bring atonement—
let not the world be without a moon.'

אמר לאברהם אדון שמים:
'אל תשלחה יד אל שליש אורים!
שובו לשלום, מלאכי מחנים
יום זה זכות לבני ירושלים
בו שערי רחמים אני פותח'
עוקד והנעקד והמזבח!
The Master of the heavens said to Abraham:
'Do not stretch out your hand against the third of the luminaries!
Return in peace, angels of the camps;
this day is a merit for the children of Jerusalem;
on it I open the gates of mercy.'
