Night of encampment. With the sound of words, with laughter, with revilement,
in the clamor of crafts it rises—here it is—
like the face of a city being built, the face of the field of slaughter,
as the camp spreads out, whose fate
is to be the shedder of human blood and its shield.
Night of encampment, night of song, night of a beaten-burnished sky,
night of many hurrying crafts, night of red steam from the cauldrons,
a night that overlays with its spell the malice of spirits,
in the building of a kingdom, a night of wandering,
standing spread over the lone man and the battalions.
Out of the first watch, between shore and hill,
there suddenly loomed the spectacle of war,
like a nomad routine, stitched of peg and rope;
in it the freedom of journeys and their emergency,
in it the tools and the statutes in their nakedness.

There the rhetoric of the slogans of the age, which
no stanza of pure poetry will engage—Heaven forfend.
Only the popular song, which is no thing of worth
and no cherished jewel, will carry them in full,
the screech of its sharp colors on his pipe.
It speaks of love—thus it begins—
and of duty and battle and yoke, everything of everything.
It does not tell this in all the subtleties
of poetry, but says it in a great voice,
without faint heart and without fear of the low.

In wartime even the image of these things
would be an image to the voice of a wandering refrain.
They will still be drawn like a filament from milk
out of a generation’s soul, even in a sown field,
to remember, not only for ill, days of ill.
This too is woven into war, all this together,
like a flash of spring poured into the people from nights and dawns;
all this, from mound and from riverbanks, will
rise in haste and then return, cut off in a wail
of a man vaulting, a man firing, a man falling,
a man vaulting, a man firing, a man falling...
