מפני מה נסתתר קברו של משה מעיני בשר ודם מפני שגלוי וידוע לפני הקדוש ברוך הוא שעתיד בית המקדש ליחרב ולהגלות את ישראל מארצם שמא יבואו לקבורתו של משה באותה שעה ויעמדו בבכיה ויתחננו למשה ויאמרו לו, משה רבינו עמוד בתפילה בעדנו ועומד משה ומבטל את הגזירה מפני שחביבים צדיקים במיתתם יותר מבחייהם

Why was Moses’ grave hidden from the eyes of flesh and blood? Because it was revealed and known before the Holy One, blessed be He, that the Temple would in the future be destroyed and Israel exiled from their land, lest they come at that time to Moses’ grave and stand weeping and plead with Moses and say to him, “Moses our teacher, stand in prayer for us,” and Moses would rise and annul the decree, for the righteous are more beloved in their death than in their life.
