Man is nothing but
a piece of sophisticated mud.
How so, what is mud?
— Soil soaked with moisture.
So too the human:
dust of the earth,
as it is said: for you are dust and from dust you were taken —
soaked with all sorts of liquids of various kinds.
Only, sophisticated...
bounded and delimited
by a half-hairy, half-smooth casing,
sealed and permeable by turns,
and it has a certain likeness
and a completed form, and this
is sophisticated... for mud,
it is sophisticated, since
plain mud, yes, plain mud —
has form.
Mud that dries crumbles —
on light soils, by itself;
on heavy soils —
there are clods you won’t crumble
with a five‑kilo hammer,
but not even such a clod will take itself
to the nearest tavern and order
a glass of cold water to, say, glue itself back together,
and a box of rye flour to sniff.
As if... just run over it
with Shinitsky’s heavy‑duty hydro‑pneumatic discus,
and you make of it
a seedbed. What is there to talk about:
mud that dries — crumbles.
And a human who dries also crumbles —
only, sophisticated...
wrapped and swaddled, or bounded and enclosed within a coffin,
and gives himself over to a multitude
of little pieces of mud, themselves sophisticated as well
(indeed much less so, but still) —
and leaves a skeleton to have the last laugh,
as it is said, he who laughs last laughs,
and the last to laugh is only a skeleton.
“He who laughs, laughs,” said the child,
and he has a gravestone, and an inscription,
and that — is sophisticated...
for
plain mud — what gravestone does it have,
what inscription?
Therefore, we have said:
man is nothing but
a piece of
sophisticated mud.
